Lightweight one-person backpacking tent

Lightweight one-person backpacking tent was the most demanding project i did so far. I decided to design a camping tent for my Diplom Thesis and the whole design process lasted 10 months. In my thesis i gathered all the knowledge gained during my studies. I went through the whole design thinking process to identify the user's needs through questionnaires, interviews, affinity diagrams, mind-maps and of course bibliographical research. When the research was done i procceeded to the ideation and the creation of 3 concepts , as well as the final concept and its brand. It was a really intriguing journey and at the end the result was very satisfying.


The final brief was to design a 3season camping tent for one person. The context in which the tent was going to be used was "backpacking camping" in the woods and mountain. Backpacking camping is a type of camping in which there is contunuous moving and includes unpredictable weather and ground conditions where the size and the weight of the equipment are the most important factors. So the equipment used is very specific and the tent must weigh at most 2 kg. The final concept was modelled in ANYS software and it was calculated at about 1,35kg. The tent satisfies the needs mentioned above through the selection of the materials and the geometry, but also satisfies the need for comfort through its design. Its dimensions are : 115cm height, 120cm width and 220cm length. 

In the following photos is presented the final concept:
The tent has only 2 poles ( the green pole and the red one ) in the middle. Along the inner fabric there are clips every 30cm that are attached to the poles when the tent is set. It has two big doors and two fabrics for maximum ventilation.
The tent consists of two fabrics made of Cuben. The inner fabric is transparent and the flysheet covers and protects the user.
The strap consists of 3 parts. The plastic for better stability, the red rubber in the middle for flexibility and the black belt that is attached on the fabric.
The two poles stand with a small mechanism that is attached to the strap. 
The brand
After identifying the values of the brand, the logo and the slogan of it were identified. Our brand, solano, is named after the word Sol, which is an internationally well-know word for the sun and the greek word "'άνω" ( in greeklish : ano ), which means "up". This way our brand calls the camper to get out in the nature and have the sun above him in sunny days, enjoying the nature and come closer to it.
